Finished Deathly Hallows
In less than 24 hours, a record for me! And loved it, in the sense that the story kept me turning pages at an amazing rate. The only other book to match it in intensity was GoF. Flaws are certain to be exposed on further reading, although DH now has his hands on it, having elected not to wait for the Bloomsbury version to arrive after all. I intended a reread to pull my thoughts together, but I'll make do without --

The body count was suprisingly high, especially since it included several experienced Order members and only one student, who was underage and shouldn't have been there. Harry's DA training must have been extraordinary.

Speaking of students at Hogwarts, I thought the Creeveys were muggleborn, so what were they doing at Hogwarts?

Having spent a bit of bandwith defending Harrycrux, I can't complain about how it was used, or why the information was withheld.

Not surprisingly, I liked Dumbledore better for his flaws. I found his backstory very much in character.)

Cheers for some of my favorite characters -- Neville, Ron, Percy, SNAPE! (But Lupin, another old favorite, didn't work so well for me.)

After having vigilantly guarded myself against spoilers all week, I hit a particularly bleak moment in the tent-camping adventure that compelled me to read the epilogue. Oddly, I found that reading the epilogue enhanced my enjoyment of the book. It's all in the journey, not the result.

Was there ever an explanation of the spell Harry's wand executed by itself during the flight from Privet Drive? I had assumed from the outset that it was Snape's doing, but don't remember any resolution of this.

I had problems with the wedding chapter; Harry was acting like Harry and not a Weasley cousin, but somehow Elphias Doge and Auntie Muriel completely failed to be surprised by the conversation.

Who were Rose and Hugo?

I'll have more comments on my second read.

(But Lupin, another old favorite, didn't work so well for me.)

As I've just commented on Marina's LJ, he always wanted to die, and he got what he wanted, damn him. I had high hopes Harry was talking some sense and will-to-live into him, then he's dead. It's really no fair that he got away with it. You want to smack him for dying.

What was it with the Marauders and death wishes? I thought Sirius had a death wish big time, too.

I woke up this morning realizing that I'd failed to include Neville in my cheers for favorite characters list. I'll have to edit my entry immediately.

Rose and Hugo seem to me to be Ron and Hermione's children - Ron refers to disinheriting Hugo if he doesn't get into Gryffindor and also says Rose inherited her mother's brains - Rose is the older, about to go to Hogwarts for the first time - the same age as Albus (about 11), Hugo is a little younger - probably about the same age as Lily (who is about nine).

Yes, I phrased my question badly. I was wondering who (if anyone) Rose and Hugo were named after. The rest of the next generations' names seem to have been very carefully chosen. Are they Hermione's parents? To me, Rose is a Catholic school name, so it seems wildly out of place otherwise.

I expect they're named after some of the legion Weasley cousins/aunts/uncles.

Rose sounds like a very old school wizarding name - we've noted lots of flower names amongst Slytherins. I used it in an unfinished fanfic for that reason. Hugo also just sounds like a Weasley name. (It's also the name of an award won by GOF).

The body count was suprisingly high, especially since it included several experienced Order members and only one student, who was underage and shouldn't have been there. Harry's DA training must have been extraordinary.

Well, there were about fifty bodies laid out IIRC and we don't know who most of them were, so I'd guess there were a fair number of students there.

Rose is a good Gamgee name. Seems appropriate to me.

Seriously, I strongly expect that the answer to this one is in the personal life of JKR - perhaps to do with the friend that Ron is based on.

I know exactly what you mean about the camping section. I hit a real low with that bit as well and had to force myself on, but wasn't tempted to look ahead!

On Colin Creevy - I think they're half-blood. At least, he and Denis are brought up by their milkman father, and no mention is made of the mother, who was probably a witch. I prefer to think that, rather than it being a Flint.
